They Say That Breaking Up is (Not) Hard To Do

Updated: Mar 29, 2023

Remember the “Sex and the City” episode where Carrie’s boyfriend, Berger, broke up with her on a Post-It Note? That’s so yesterday.

According to the DailyMail.com, an online affiliate of the UK’s Daily Mail, couples today are breaking up via text message.

The article claims that men and women from around the world learned they were digitally dumped by looking at their phones. Here are some of their stories.

“My wife thought that the perfect time to ask for a divorce was over a text message while I was at my grandmother’s funeral.”

“My husband asked for a divorce over text. Part of our failure was lack of communication. Go figure.”

“My wife asked for a divorce through text while I was literally in the other room.”

“7 days ago, I was blind-sided by my husband texting me out of nowhere that he wasn’t coming home and he wanted a divorce.”

“My wife went to go visit family for the weekend. She asked for a divorce in a text. She left me with both our kids a 1-year-old and a 1-month-old.”

“My husband told me over text message that he wants a divorce and then followed it up by confessing he’s been sleeping with someone else for a year.”

Frankly, I thought all these stories were made up until I Googled, “breaking up by text” and found dozens of articles covering: three ways to break up by text; when it’s permissible to break up by text; why it’s disrespectful to break up with someone in a text; and why breaking up via text message is perfectly okay.

My young friend Kiayla prefers Direct Messenger break-ups to text break-ups. “With text you can’t be sure if the message was received, but DM lets you know it was ‘seen’.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling nostalgic for Post-It notes.

I welcome your comments.
